Police: Lake Shore Drive reopens after 1 killed, 7 injured in crash

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - Lanes were reopen early Tuesday after a person was killed and seven others were hurt Monday evening in a crash on Lake Shore Drive near the Uptown neighborhood, police said.

A Chevrolet traveling south at 5:57 p.m. in the 4700 block of North Lake Shore Drive crossed the median into the northbound lanes and hit three other vehicles, according to Chicago Police. Investigators believed speed was a factor in the crash as the driver tried to change lanes.

The Chevrolet’s female driver was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office didn’t immediately confirm the death.

Seven other people also were injured, six of which were taken to area hospitals for treatment, police and Chicago Fire Media said.

Three people were listed in serious-to-critical condition, according to the Fire Department. Two were treated at Illinois Masonic Medical Center and another was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

Three other people, including two pedestrians, were listed in fair-to-serious condition, authorities said. The pedestrians were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital, and the other person was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A seventh person told authorities they didn’t want treatment.

All lanes were closed on Lake Shore Drive for several hours as authorities investigated the crash, official said. Southbound lanes had reopened shortly before 9:30 p.m., and all lanes were open by early Tuesday.
