CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - One man was killed and at least nine other people were wounded in shootings Wednesday on the city’s South and West sides, according to Chicago Police.
The 36-year-old man was shot to death in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side, police said. He was standing on the street at 11:10 p.m. in the 7400 block of South Chappel when he heard shots and realized he’d been struck. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and groin and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the fatality. Area Central detectives have opened a homicide investigation.
About 7:30 p.m., someone in a white car opened fire on three men on a sidewalk in the 800 block of North Waller in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, according to Chicago Police. The car then sped away east on Huron. One man, 23, was shot in the abdomen and taken in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Another 23-year-old was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with gunshot wounds to the wrist and hand, and the third victim, 21, was taken to Stroger Hospital with wounds to the arm and back. His condition stabilized, police said.
An hour earlier, a 16-year-old boy was shot a mile away in the same neighborhood. Someone walked out of an alley in the 1100 block of North Lawler and shot him in the right thigh, police said. Officers found the boy on the floor of an apartment and used a belt as a tourniquet, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition.
About 2:45 p.m., a 22-year-old man was sitting in front of a home in the 5600 block of South Damen in the South Side Englewood neighborhood when someone walked up and shot him twice in the leg and four times in the buttocks, police said. He was taken to Stroger in good condition.
More Englewood gunfire left another 22-year-old man in critical condition at Stroger after being shot in the abdomen in the 7400 block of South Stewart at 1:24 p.m., but the victim was uncooperative with investigators, police said.
About 12:45 p.m., two people were wounded in a Back of the Yards neighborhood shooting. The 19-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were outside talking near 51st Street and Wolcott when they heard gunshots, police said. She was struck in the leg and taken to Stroger in good condition; his condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai with a gunshot wound to the buttocks.
Wednesday’s first shooting happened just before 9 a.m. in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. A 33-year-old man was in the 4300 block of West Jackson when a black car drove by and someone inside fired shots, hitting him in the forearm, police said. His condition was stabilized at Stroger.
Thirteen people were shot in the city on Tuesday, and 23 on Monday. Three of those victims died.
