Suspect dead after shootout with Lombard police

A suspect was killed and a police officer was wounded in a shootout that took place after an armed robbery Thursday afternoon in Lombard.

A suspect was killed and a police officer was wounded in a shootout that took place after an armed robbery Thursday afternoon in Lombard.

Lombard police officers responded to a report of an armed robbery around 4:05 p.m. at a retail store in the first block of West Roosevelt Road.

Officers ran into two male suspects near Ann and Lincoln streets, officials said.

One of the suspects started shooting at police and officers returned fire, according to officials 

The officer and the suspect were transported to an area hospital where the suspect was pronounced dead, officials said.

The officer had surgery for his injuries Thursday night and remains hospitalized, officials said.

The second suspect at the scene was taken into custody and charges are pending.
