Deadly Portage Park shooting
What we know:
The shooting occurred just before 5 a.m. on Jan. 16 in the 5800 block of West Newport Avenue.
Chicago police said the 35-year-old mother, Edith Castrejon, was shot once in the chest and transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The baby boy was delivered after his mother died from a gunshot wound.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the Castrejon's death as a homicide.
Charges Filed:
Robert Pasco III, 42, was arrested on Jan. 16 and charged in connection with the shooting, according to court records.
He faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and possession of a firearm without a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card.
Pasco was asleep in bed with Castrejon, who was pregnant, and three small children in the same room.
According to court documents, Pasco kept a firearm under his pillow.
During the night, Castrejon grabbed the firearm, causing Pasco to wake up and discharge the gun, court documents state.
Castrejon was shot in the upper chest. Pasco then placed the firearm in a closet before police arrived.
Authorities said the weapon was a loaded black semi-automatic 9mm "ghost gun" and that Pasco is a convicted felon with "multiple prior convictions for weapons offenses."
What we don't know:
Authorities have not released additional details about the incident.
It's also unknown if Pasco will face additional charges after the infant's death.
This is a developing story and we'll bring more updates as they become available.
