A fiery interstate crash in Oklahoma on Wednesday marked the end of an exhaustive search for a suspect in the gruesome murders of a Romeoville family over the weekend.

Two persons of interest were identified after the family of four was shot to death in their suburban home.

However, in a shocking turn of events, the mysterious case got even more complicated with police sharing that both persons of interest are dead.

Man wanted in Romeoville murders dead after police chase, fiery crash

Within hours of the shooting, police identified Nathaniel Huey Jr., 31, of Streamwood, and a woman, who was in a relationship with Huey, as the persons of interest.

Monday morning, police shut down the street for the investigation, removing several pieces of evidence from the home, including a computer server.

Investigators believe the shooting took place between 9 p.m. Saturday and 5 a.m. Sunday.

Early in their investigation, police said they identified Nathaniel Huey Jr., 32, of Streamwood, and a woman "with a relationship to Huey," as persons of interest.

Without revealing details, officials said there is a possible motive, and said the suspect had a connection to his victims.

On Tuesday evening, the female person of interest was reported to be missing and endangered by her family out of Streamwood.

Earlier in the day, officials announced that based on a "tremendous amount of physical evidence" collected at the scene, detectives have determined the attack was targeted, and "not a random incident." Police then issued a statewide bulletin that was distributed to local law enforcement agencies, stating that Huey was a credible person of interest in the Romeoville murders.

According to the bulletin, Huey had extensive firearm training and had become "irrational and erratic."

On Wednesday morning, acting on a digital license plate reader, the Catoosa, Oklahoma Police Department was alerted to the presence of the suspect vehicle.

Romeoville police provide update on family killed in home

Romeoville police provide an update after a family of four and their three dogs were found murdered in their home.

Local authorities located the vehicle, which was empty. An official with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) tells FOX 32 Chicago that soon after, a man and a woman entered the vehicle and started to drive away.

That’s when authorities attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

"The vehicle immediately attempted to elude the officers resulting in a single car crash of the suspect vehicle, causing the vehicle to catch on fire," said Burne.

The fiery crash unfolded on I-44 in Catoosa, Oklahoma.

"Officers then attempted to make contact by giving commands, but received no response," said Hunter McKee with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

"Officers on scene heard two noises, believed to be gunshots," said Burne.

Suburban community in shock after murder of entire family

Romeoville police said two adults and two children were shot in the house, along with three dogs, late Saturday or early Sunday.

As police approached the vehicle, they located a woman with a gunshot wound in critical condition and a man with a gunshot wound, who was deceased.

The female passenger was taken to an Oklahoma hospital in critical condition. OSBI officials later confirmed that she succumbed to her injuries.

The deceased driver is believed to be Huey, Romeoville police said.

While the search for the gunman came to a sudden halt, the investigation is far from over.

At the suspect’s Streamwood home, in the 800 block of Sumac Drive, investigators were seen removing evidence.

"All of them booked into the house. And then they came out and emptied the garbage cans onto the driveway, they sorted through that, and a couple things they put on the side, because they were ripping through the garbage bags," said Richard Hackworth, one of the suspect’s neighbors.

Neighbors said that Huey would wave "hello" and "goodbye" like most others on the block, and that they never expected him to be connected to this brutal crime.

"He never showed anything of that nature, so I don’t know what it might have been that caused him to do this, but just a normal neighbor," said Hackworth.

Court records show that Huey was previously arrested for battery in 2015, and DUI in 2017.

Those who lived near the victims in Romeoville said the family had only moved to the block a few months ago. Neighbors there said they never noticed any issues at the home.

On Wednesday evening, a woman identifying herself as Bartolomei’s sister posted a statement to Facebook, writing in part:

"We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of solidarity and support following the tragic loss of Zoraida Bartolomei, her husband Alberto Rolon, and their sons Adriel and Diego. At this moment, our primary focus is on channeling support, assistance, and love for our family and loved ones."

Romeoville Mayor John Noak released the following statement on the murders:

"Our entire community is grieving with the family over this tragic incident. It is always heartbreaking whenever there is a loss of life, but when there are children involved it’s much more painful. I have directed our social services staff to make themselves available to our community to help begin the healing process. It is important that we conduct a thorough investigation and we have committed our full resources to that task. The victims deserve that."

A GoFundMe account created to help cover the costs of the family's funerals had raised more than $30,000 by Wednesday evening.

The Streamwood Police Department tells FOX 32 Chicago that it is referring all questions about the case to the Romeoville Police Department.

Officials with the Romeoville Police Department said Wednesday’s development does not conclude their investigation, stating that it is "active and evolving."

Editor’s Note: Police stated that the suspect, Nathaniel Huey Jr. is 31 years old, however, court records obtained by FOX 32 Chicago show that he is 32 years old.
