CHICAGO - A woman was killed, and a man was critically injured in an apartment fire in South Chicago Sunday night.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to a blaze at a building located at 9177 S. South Chicago Avenue at approximately 11:38 p.m. The fire was in an 8th-floor unit.
A 64-year-old man was transported to Trinity Hospital and was later transferred to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
Fire officials say a woman was transported to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.
The fire started on the couch. Chicago Fire Department Director Larry Langford said the fire was caused by the careless use of smoking materials.
No other injuries were reported.
