Deadly South Shore apartment fire leaves several injured

One person was killed in an apartment fire in South Shore early Saturday morning. At least three others were injured. Fire officials said a family of six was also displaced.

A man and a child were killed, and three others were injured in an apartment fire in South Shore early Saturday morning.

The Chicago Fire Department responded to a fire in a three-story building located in the 2400 block of East 78th Street around 2:30 a.m. 

Chicago police said a 24-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Two other adults and two children were transported to area hospitals. A 7-year-old boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. On Tuesday, the child was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the boy as Adrian Matias.

A 2-year-old boy was taken to the same hospital in good condition. 

A 24-year-old woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. A 27-year-old man was taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition with a non-fire-related injury. 

Police said a total of 23 people were displaced. The Red Cross was on the scene assisting. 

The fire remains under investigation.
