CHICAGO - A woman was fatally stabbed and an off-duty police officer was grazed by gunfire Tuesday afternoon on Chicago's Northwest Side.
The incident occurred around 2:23 p.m. near a residence in the 5600 block of West Leland Avenue.
According to Chicago police, the officer witnessed a stabbing and intervened by firing shots at the offender.
During the gunfire, the officer sustained a graze wound to the leg.
The stabbing victim died at the scene, police said. The officer was taken to Lutheran General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Chicago police are searching for the offender who got away.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the incident. The officer involved will be placed on administrative duties for at least 30 days.
