SKOKIE (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - A woman was killed and at least six other people were injured when a CTA Yellow Line train struck a vehicle Monday morning in north suburban Skokie.
The vehicle was southbound in the 7700 block of East Prairie Road near a grade crossing when it was struck by an eastbound Yellow Line train at 10:21 a.m., according to Skokie police.
Blandina Hermez, 62, who was the passenger inside the vehicle, was taken to Skokie Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:08 a.m., authorities said. She lived in the 4100 block of Oakton Street in Skokie, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The 45-year-old woman at the wheel of the vehicle was taken in critical condition to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, police said.
Five passengers on the train were also taken to hospitals with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.
“The status of the crossing gates at the time of the crash is still unknown,” according to a police statement.
Yellow Line trains were suspended until about 5 p.m. as crews cleared the scene, according to the CTA.
