Rebecca Brahier | Pottawattamie County Jail
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa mother who admitted to police that she shoved her 1-year-old son's arm into hot coffee to "teach him a lesson" has been sentenced to five years in prison.
The Daily Nonpareil reports that 36-year-old Rebecca Brahier pleaded guilty Tuesday to child endangerment resulting in injury. She received credit for time served in jail since her November arrest.
Doctors say the boy suffered blistering and that his skin was sloughing off on his left hand and arm. Hospital medical staff called the police.
Police say Brahier told officers the baby kept reaching for her hot coffee cup, so she intentionally submerged the baby's arm in the coffee so he could learn that it is hot.
Her attorney, Peter Tenny, says "the child's wounds are healing well."
