CHICAGO - Snow and ice caused some problems for Chicago-area commuters today.
There was not a lot of accumulation in Lake County but it was enough to impact driving and walking.
Work crews salted, shoveled, and plowed at the Lake Forest Oasis, where drivers took a break from some treacherous driving.
They say visibility was difficult with freezing rain hitting the windshield. Surfaces were shiny with a glaze of ice. Temperatures combined with precipitation to form slippery street conditions.
Tollway plows and salt trucks patrolled overnight.
Drivers reported some roads were better than others.
John, an Uber driver, traveled from Wisconsin to Midway and O’Hare airports. He said the road conditions in Illinois are better but travel around O’Hare was messy until crews cleared the snow.

Manvinder Singh said driving was difficult because of the slippery snow and limited visibility.\
One driver climbed onto the tire of his pickup truck to get a better angle at clearing ice from the windshield. He said he came from California and didn’t have an ice scraper. He used a large bottle opener to break up the ice on his windshield.
Drivers said they had to be alert, definitely noticing more vehicles on the highways with people returning from the holidays.
A ground stop was in effect for three hours Monday morning at O'Hare Airport. Over 140 flights were canceled at the airport with delays of more than two hours reported.
