Chicago weather: Storm system will bring wintry mix

Chicago basked in unseasonably warm weather Tuesday, with sunny skies and temperatures soaring into the mid to upper 40s, well above the January average of 31 degrees.

A few spots even touched 50 degrees, giving residents a welcome break from the winter chill.

What we know:

The mild weather will continue for now, with tonight bringing mostly clear to partly cloudy skies and lows hovering near freezing. Wednesday will cool slightly, but highs in the low 40s will still exceed the seasonal norm.

Thursday is shaping up to be another warm day, with early sunshine and highs in the upper 40s. If the sun sticks around longer than expected, some areas may again hit the 50-degree mark. Clouds will increase in the afternoon ahead of an approaching storm system, bringing rain showers by evening.

As colder air arrives Thursday night into Friday, rain may mix with snow at times. Highs on Friday will drop into the mid to upper 30s.

What's next:

Skies are expected to dry out for the weekend. Saturday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 30s, while Sunday will warm to the mid 40s. Cooler, more seasonable air returns early next week, with highs in the mid 30s Monday and low 30s on Tuesday under cloudy skies.
