23-year-old man caught in crossfire during attempted vehicle break-in: police

A bystander was shot during an exchange of gunfire Thursday night on Chicago's South Side, police said.

Around 10:20 p.m., a 40-year-old man with a concealed carry license confronted someone attempting to break into a vehicle outside his home in the 8700 block of South Dauphin Avenue. The offender fled on foot, but a second individual exited a nearby vehicle and fired at the man, who returned fire, authorities said.

The second offender then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.

While investigating, police discovered that a 23-year-old man nearby had been struck in the thigh. He was taken to an area hospital in serious condition, police said.

No arrests have been made, and Area Two detectives are investigating.
