5 killed, 27 wounded in Chicago shootings over MLK weekend
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Five men were killed and at least 27 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.
The most recent homicide happened late Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in a Rogers Park neighborhood shooting on the North Side.
A 20-year-old man was found about 11:50 p.m. Monday sitting in the passenger seat of a parked vehicle in the 6800 block of North Ridge, according to Chicago Police.
He had been shot in the chest and back and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but did not release additional details early Tuesday.
Another man was shot to death Sunday evening in a Hermosa neighborhood alley on the Northwest Side.
Emergency crews found 39-year-old Rene Ramirez unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back in the 1900 block of North Keeler just before 6 p.m., authorities said.
Ramirez, who lived on the same block, was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said.
Saturday night, a 29-year-old man was gunned down in the Irving Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
Henry Cruz, 29, was found shot in the head about 8:15 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene in the 3200 block of West Irving Park Road, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Cruz lived in the 800 block of North Hamlin.
Two men were killed in separate shootings late Saturday morning on the Southwest and Far South sides.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 11:45 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Cicero in Garfield Ridge found Quintae Little with a gunshot wound to the right side of his torso, authorities said.
The 34-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died less than an hour later. He lived in the 4500 block of South Lavergne, authorities said.
Officers recovered a weapon from Little on the scene, police said.
About 10:30 a.m., a northwest Indiana man was killed in a domestic related shooting in Roseland.
Corey Ferguson, 32, was fighting with a 55-year-old man in the 11200 block of South Normal when the older man pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting Ferguson in the chest, authorities said.
He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 11:16 a.m. He lived in the 1500 block of Ralston Street in Gary, Indiana.
The shooter was identified as Terry Givan, who faces first-degree murder charges.
The latest nonfatal shooting happened Monday night in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.
About 8:30 p.m., a 34-year-old man was a passenger on a No. 75 CTA bus traveling eastbound on 75th Street near Martin Luther King Drive when he got into an argument with several people on the bus, according to Chicago Police and CTA spokesman Jeff Tolman.
The man chased the other people off the bus and later returned, police said. It was then that he discovered he was shot in the leg.
He was taken to Stoger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Fire officials initially said the man’s daughter, a minor, had been shot in the same incident but later corrected that, saying she had suffered other minor injuries. She was taken to Stroger with her father as a precaution.
Earlier Monday afternoon, a man was shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
The 25-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 2400 block of West Marquette at 12:55 p.m., police said. He was taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
About 40 minutes earlier, a 31-year-old man was shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.
The man was in his vehicle about 12:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of South Karlov when someone fired shots, striking him in the hand, police said. He took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in good condition.
A police source said the man was not cooperating with investigators, but that the shooting was likely drug-related.
At least 24 other people were injured in other shootings across Chicago between 6:45 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.
