9-year-old's American flag tattoo sparks debate about tattooing minors

A nine-year-old girl is causing a stir online after she got an American flag tattooed on her arm at a tattoo shop in Yuma.

It's legal in Arizona to tattoo a minor with parental consent, but people are criticizing the tattoo shop, saying nine is too young to get a tattoo.

Last year, the girl went into Black Onyx Empire Tattoo asking for a portrait of Donald Trump on her neck. The artist and owner of the shop, who goes by Sosa, says he convinced the girl to get a tattoo of the American flag instead and asked her if she still wanted the Trump tattoo to come back in a year.

Now 10-years-old, the girl came back in and changed her mind about the Trump portrait, but got her flag tattoo touched-up.

We spoke to Sosa who said just because it's legal, doesn't mean he thinks it's right

"There should be laws and regulations of limiting the ages in order to do these procedures. I think there is a law that should be created. Like everybody's opinion, a lot of people think it's wrong. I agree," he said.

Sosa tells us he tried to scare the girl and her family away by overcharging hundreds of dollars, but they jumped on that price.

He also says the girl and her family are refugees from Turkey, and they brought her here from out-of-state to get the tattoo.
