Former Aurora hospital building reopens as new café

AURORA, Ill. - The former Copley Hospital building in west suburban Aurora reopened on Monday as a new neighborhood café, the city announced.

The facility was built in 1888 and originally called the City Hospital of Aurora and was the only hospital in the city until 1900.

Now, the building will house the Atrevete Café 1888, a nod to the year it was built. It’s the second site of the popular Atrevete Confections in neighboring Montgomery.

The café serves fine French pastries from Chef Jaqueline Mejia, as well as velvety lattes, espressos, macaroons, muffins, sandwiches and much more.

City leaders were expected to hold a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The city said the cafe is a complementary addition to the Bloomhaven Campus that’s reimagined the former Copley Hospital that sat vacant for 25 years. The campus includes a 53-unit residential haven for adults with disabilities, a 99-unit residential community for older adults, and the East Aurora School District 131 main administration building.
