Car crashes into Joliet McDonald's after two-vehicle collision
What we know
A two-vehicle crash in Joliet on Tuesday led to one of the vehicles smashing into the dining area of a McDonald’s restaurant.
According to police, the crash happened at 4:14 p.m. when a Nissan Versa, driven by 70-year-old Esther Baker-Williams of Shorewood, rear-ended a GMC Acadia in the westbound lane of West Jefferson Street.
The impact caused the Nissan to veer out of control, crossing the eastbound lanes and crashing into the north side of the McDonald’s at 4280 West Jefferson Street.
The car came to a stop inside the dining area of the restaurant, where a 31-year-old Plainfield man was struck in the leg by a table and shattered glass. He sustained minor injuries but was not taken to the hospital.
Baker-Williams was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say she may have experienced a medical event before the crash. She was also cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
The driver of the GMC Acadia, a 55-year-old Joliet man, was uninjured.
A city building inspector was called to the scene to assess the significant damage to the restaurant.
What we don’t know
It's unclear if, and how long, the McDonald’s will be closed for repairs.
