Chicago man charged with murder in Southwest Side shooting last year

    • A 28-year-old Chicago man, Luis Vela, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting on the Southwest Side in July 2023.
    • Vela is accused of opening fire on two men outside in the 4400 block of S. Wood, killing a 24-year-old man and critically injuring a 25-year-old man.
    • Vela was arrested Thursday in the 3000 block of S. Farrell and is scheduled for a detention hearing on Dec. 29.

CHICAGO - A 28-year-old Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a deadly shooting on the city's Southwest Side last year.

Luis Vela was arrested Thursday in the 3000 block of S. Farrell after being identified as a suspect in the July 4, 2023, shooting in the 4400 block of S. Wood, according to Chicago police.

Police said Vela got out of a vehicle and opened fire on two men who were outside in the area.

A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times and died at the scene, authorities said. A 25-year-old man was also shot and critically injured.

Vela is expected in court on Dec. 29 for a detention hearing.
