Chicago man charged with murder in New Year's Day shooting

A man was charged in connection with a fatal shooting Wednesday morning in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

Reginald Freeman, 38, allegedly shot and killed a 43-year-old woman around 3 a.m. inside a home in the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue, according to police.

Freeman was arrested minutes later near the scene of the shooting. He was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder.

Freeman has a detention hearing scheduled for Friday.

The victim was one of 16 people who were shot on New Year's Day in Chicago.
