Chicago Police teaming up with federal agents to fight shocking rise in carjackings
CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - Chicago is teaming up with federal agents to fight the city's escalating carjacking problem.
There were about 950 carjackings in Chicago in 2017, up from around 700 in 2016. There have been about 90 so far this year, an average of three every day.
Police will hold a news conference on Sunday to announce more details about the task force.
This is the second time that CPD has used a joint task force to fight carjackings. Police said that a joint CPD-FBI task force helped combat carjackings on the West Side last year.
On Friday night, three teenage boys were arrested after trying to carjack someone outside a Double Tree Hotel in Streeterville. The incident happened at the corner of Fairbanks and Ohio, where one of the teenagers tried to jump into the victim's car.
The car belongs to retired police officer Ricky Fobbs, who fought back.
