Chicago police to increase surveillance at Christkindlmarket after German market attack

Chicago police are closely monitoring the Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza after an attack at a Christmas market in Germany left at least two people dead and dozens injured, some critically.

Authorities said no threats have been reported at this time.

"The Chicago Police Department is aware and continuing to monitor this incident. While there is no actionable intelligence at this time, CPD has a special attention on the Christkindlmarket," Chicago Police said in a statement. 

On Friday night, a car plowed through a crowded outdoor Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, killing at least two people and injuring at least 68 others, authorities said.

Among the injured, 15 were reported to be in critical condition, according to reports.

The driver in the German attack is in custody and is believed to be from Saudi Arabia, though authorities have not released details about a possible motive.

The Christkindlmarket has two locations – Daley Plaza in Chicago and River Edge Park in Aurora. The last day of the holiday market will be Dec. 24.
