Chicago to buy more than 20 all-electric buses
CHICAGO (AP) — Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago Transit Authority President Dorval Carter Jr. say the city plans to buy 20 to 30 more all-electric buses in the next few years.
The Chicago mayor says the effort marks his commitment to protecting the environment.
The new plan, announced Friday, could cost between $30 million and $40 million for buses and charging systems. CTA says money for the plan would come from a combination of federal funding sources. Those sources have not been finalized.
CTA began using two 40-foot all-electric buses in October 2014. The agency says it expects each electric bus to save $25,000 in fuel costs a year.
About 15 percent of CTA buses are hybrids using electric and clean-diesel power.
