Cicero police officer shot, suspect in custody

CHICAGO (AP) - A suburban Chicago police officer has been shot while conducting an investigation on the city's southwest side.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says Cicero police Officer Luis Duarte was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago on Thursday, where he underwent surgery. The 31-year-old officer was shot four times during the encounter with a suspect near Interstate 55 at Cicero Avenue.

Cicero Police Chief Jerry Chlada Jr. says officers tried to pull over an auto that instead sped away and tried to get onto the expressway. Officers boxed in the auto, after which a man in the auto opened fire on two officers as he fled on foot. Chlada says a civilian concealed-carry gun owner joined in the gun fight.

The suspect was wounded once and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

Guglielmi says the suspect is in custody and a weapon was recovered at the scene.
