CICERO, Ill. - Following recent ICE raids across the Chicago area, residents of one suburb are calling for stronger protections from federal immigration enforcement.
ICE raids controversy
What we know:
This past weekend, immigration enforcement raids were conducted in Berwyn and Cicero, which is home to one of the highest per capital immigrant communities in the nation.
Advocates say the lack of a sanctuary city policy in Cicero has left many in fear.
Diana Garcia, a candidate for Cicero Town Collector, criticized local leaders for their inaction.
"At a time when leadership and transparency are critical, our community deserves clear and decisive action. Our residents deserve leaders who prioritize the wellbeing of their communities in every decision they make," she said.
What we don't know:
It is unclear how many people were detained in the recent ICE raids in Cicero and Berwyn.
What's next:
Illinois is officially a "welcoming state," meaning local law enforcement is restricted from cooperating with ICE. However, a new Republican-backed bill could change that by requiring Illinois police to assist federal immigration enforcement.
Meanwhile, on a broader scale, immigration policies remain a key issue, with Indiana Gov. Mike Braun recently signing an executive order directing state police and the National Guard to fully cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
