Cook County man on electronic monitoring allegedly fired shots at home in Des Plaines

A 28-year-old man from Cook County has been charged in connection with a shooting that happened Monday morning in Des Plaines.

Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 1500 block of Walnut Avenue around 11:15 a.m. When they arrived, they found that no one had been injured.

Investigators later identified the suspect as Dakane L. Masters, from Skokie.

According to police, Masters drove to the 1500 block of Oakwood Avenue, parked his car in an alley between Oakwood and Walnut, and then walked into a fenced yard. There, he fired four rounds at a nearby home, hitting it but causing no injuries.

Surveillance footage, including images from Flock cameras, captured Masters’ vehicle before, during, and after the shooting. Additionally, because Masters was on electronic monitoring from a previous arrest, investigators were able to use that data to confirm his presence in the yard at the time of the incident.

Around 4:10 p.m., Masters returned to his home and was arrested. While he admitted being in the area, he denied any involvement in the shooting.

When police searched his vehicle, they found a stolen 9mm pistol under the front passenger seat. They also found clothing matching what the shooter was wearing, as well as gloves seen in the surveillance footage.

Masters is facing charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm/occupied, armed habitual criminal and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He is currently being held in custody.
