Train hits, kills man, 40, in Coal City, 65 miles southwest of Chicago

A 40-year-old man was hit and killed by a train traveling through Coal City early Wednesday morning, about 65 miles southwest of Chicago.

The train was traveling north through Coal City after crossing the Route 113 crossing when the engineer saw a person on the tracks, according to the Grundy County Coroner's Office.

The train applied its emergency brakes and sounded its horn, but it ultimately hit the person.

The victim died at the scene. He was identified as Scott T. Marizza, of Coal City.

Investigators said it was unclear why Marizza was on the tracks. 

Coal City police and the coroner's office are investigating.
