Fight at South Side high school leads to lockdown, pepper spray use

CHICAGO - A fight broke out at a high school on Chicago's South Side, leading to a lockdown and the use of pepper spray to contain the situation.

The incident occurred Friday morning at Englewood STEM High School. 

Details on what led to the fight have not been released, but Principal Christopher Shelton said pepper spray was used to help control the altercation. The school also went on lockdown.

Chicago police and the CPS Office of Safety and Security responded to the scene.

The lockdown was lifted once it was deemed safe, and police provided support during student dismissal.

"While I cannot provide further details about this incident for privacy reasons, I can share that everyone is safe and there were no injuries," said Shelton. "We are handling this situation in accordance with CPS policies." 

Shelton urged parents to notify the school if their child is feeling fearful or concerned, so extra support can be provided.

"We will continue striving to provide all students with a safe, positive school environment," Shelton added.
