Fatal police shooting

What we know:

Police were called to a home in the 2300 block of Waverly Drive on Jan. 11 for a family dispute.

Officers met the mother of the man at the front door of the home. She told officers that her son had guns and he was inside the home.

Officers encountered the man inside and he had a handgun in each hand. The officers asked him to put down the guns.

The man "appeared to be upset" with his mother and threatened her and officers, police said.

An officer fired his gun at the man. Officers then disarmed him.

Paramedics took the man to Methodist Northlake Hospital where the man died.

The suspect was identified as a Gary resident.

Both officers involved in the case were put on paid administrative leave.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.

What we don't know:

Gary police did not identify the 26-year-old man.

What they're saying:

Gary Police Chief Derrick Cannon expressed his condolences to the family of the man.

"My condolences go out to the family and loved ones grieving the loss of this young man’s life. Any loss of life in our community is a profound tragedy. Currently, as the Lake County Sheriff is conducting an independent investigation, we are limited in our ability to disclose information regarding this case. I ask that the public be mindful and patient until all the facts are known."
