Girl, 13, dies after being swept into Lake Michigan at Loyola Beach

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A teenage girl died Friday night after she and another girl were swept into Lake Michigan at Loyola Beach on the North Side.

The girls, both 13, were swimming with a group of friends about 7:30 p.m. when they were caught by a strong current at the Rogers Park beach, according to Chicago police.

One of the girls was pulled out of the water by a police officer, and divers found the second girl about 20 minutes later, police said.

Paramedics took one girl, Darinanne Torres, to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she died, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Torres lived in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

An autopsy Saturday ruled her death a drowning accident.

Paramedics performed CPR on the other girl at the scene after she was pulled from the water, and she also was taken to St. Francis. Her condition stabilized, police said.

Beachgoers had been warned Friday of life-threatening swimming conditions along the shores of Lake Michigan, according to the National Weather Service, with waves as tall as 6 feet and strong rip currents flowing late into the evening.
