Girl, 17, killed in hit-and-run in NW Indiana; person of interest in custody

A 17-year-old girl died in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday in Gary, Ind., and a person of interest has been taken into custody, police said.

The incident occurred at 5:51 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of 5th Avenue and Madison Street.

Officers found a large amount of debris in the roadway and located the teen on the north side of 5th Avenue.

She showed no signs of life, and an electric motorized scooter was also found nearby, police said. The vehicle involved in the crash had left the scene before officers arrived.

The girl, identified as Eunikue Roberson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lake County Coroner confirmed her identity Saturday evening. A forensic autopsy will be conducted Monday morning.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and located the suspect’s vehicle at a residence. A person of interest was also taken into custody.
