Ground stop lifted at O'Hare but delays of over 2 hours remain

A ground stop was in place for roughly three hours Monday morning at O'Hare Airport with flight cancellations and delays stacking up.

The Brief

    • Snow and icy conditions led the FAA to issue a ground stop at O'Hare Airport early Monday, halting landings and departures until 9:30 a.m., followed by a ground delay.
    • Over 140 flights were canceled at O'Hare and 28 at Midway, as lake-effect snow and freezing drizzle created hazardous travel conditions across the Chicago area.

CHICAGO - A ground stop was issued for hours at O'Hare Airport Monday morning due to snowy and icy weather.

Snow and icy conditions prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to halt landings and departures at O'Hare Airport around 6:30 a.m.

The ground stop for O'Hare was officially lifted at 9:30 a.m., officials said. A ground delay was previously in effect until 8 p.m. with delays averaging over two hours. However, the FAA reported around 11 a.m. that it was downgraded to a departure delay of an average of 15 mins.

Over 140 flights have been canceled at O'Hare today with average delays lasting roughly 20 minutes. Midway Airport has reported 28 canceled flights.

Lake-effect snow and patches of freezing drizzle are expected through this evening in the Chicago area.
