Manhunt ends: Suspect accused of shooting Indiana deputy killed by police, officials say
ORANGE COUNTY, Ind. - A man accused of critically injuring a southern Indiana deputy in a shooting was fatally shot by police Saturday, ending a two-day manhunt.
Austin Schepers, 33, was found at a home in the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, according to Indiana State Police.
Details of the confrontation between Schepers and law enforcement are limited, but state police confirmed that Schepers was fatally shot at the scene by officers.
Schepers was accused of shooting Deputy Sheriff Zac Andry shortly after midnight at the intersection of U.S. 150 and State Road 56.
Andry was checking on a Pontiac Grand Prix that was partially in the roadway and was speaking with the driver, Schepers, when Schepers shot Andry multiple times, including in the head, Indiana State Police said.
Schepers and a female passenger then fled the scene in the Pontiac.
Andry was transported to University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, where he is listed in critical but stable condition, authorities said.
The passenger with Schepers was found near Orangeville around 8 a.m. Friday and was taken into custody.
On Saturday, police released additional images of Schepers, who was considered armed and dangerous and was believed to be in the New Albany, Ind. area in Floyd County and within the Kentuckiana region.
