CHICAGO - Charges have been secured in all five Chicago-area expressway shooting homicides from 2023, according to Illinois State Police (ISP).
ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly praised the hard work of the Zone 1 Violent Crime Unit East agents, who combined cutting-edge technology, in-depth investigations, and determination to solve each case.
"With intelligent investigations, technology, and good old-fashioned persistence, ISP special agents were able to not just clear 100% of Chicago area expressway shooting homicides in 2023, but obtain criminal charges in 100% of cases," said Kelly. "We will continue to relentlessly pursue justice for the victims of gun violence."
The five homicides include:
- Feb. 16, 2023: A shooting on Interstate 55 northbound at Lock Street left one victim dead at the scene. A man in his 20s from Chicago was charged with first-degree murder on March 27, 2023.
- Feb. 19, 2023: A shooting on Interstate 57 northbound at 116th Street resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a two-year-old child, and injuries to three others. A man in his 20s from Chicago was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder on Aug. 19, 2024.
- May 14, 2023: A shooting on the I-57 northbound ramp at 147th Street left one victim hospitalized, later succumbing to their injuries. A man in his 50s from Evergreen Park was indicted for first-degree murder on June 12, 2023.
- May 16, 2023: A shooting on Interstate 290 eastbound near Laramie Avenue resulted in one death. A man in his 20s from Chicago was charged with first-degree murder on June 15, 2023.
- August 28, 2023: A shooting on Interstate 94 northbound at 138th Street left one person dead. A man in his 30s from Matteson was charged with two counts of first-degree murder on February 24, 2024.
ISP also reported that expressway shootings in the Chicago area have decreased by 32% compared to last year, a 51% drop from 2022, and a 71% decrease from 2021.
