Jamie Vlamos-Jones: What we know so far about missing woman found dead in NW Indiana
LAKE STATION, Ind. - A missing woman in Northwest Indiana was found dead late last week in a wooded area near the Little Calumet River.
The body of 45-year-old Jamie Vlamos-Jones, of Porter County, was discovered Dec. 26 in Lake Station after she went missing on Dec. 18.
An independent search and rescue group discovered Vlamos-Jones' remains.
The investigation into her death is ongoing. Here's what we know so far.
What we know
Vlamos-Jones had been missing since Dec. 18 after she was last seen in the 2300 block of Cass Street in Lake Station, according to a spokesperson for Case Files Chicago.
She reportedly entered the back parking lot of a paving company on Clay Street but left on foot when informed the property was private. Family members said she left behind her purse and car, which was later towed.
Her family told FOX 32 Chicago last week that their attempts to file a missing persons report with the Porter County Sheriff’s Office were unsuccessful. They tried to file reports on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20.
FOX 32 reached out to the sheriff’s office for further information on Thursday but has not received a response.
During a search for Vlamos-Jones on Thursday, a volunteer with Team NWI - Independent Search & Rescue found her remains. Their K-9 unit was instrumental in the discovery.
"One of our dog’s, Nova, picked up on the scent and flew her handler all the way there," said Lorenzo Longoria with Team NWI – Independent Search & Rescue.
An autopsy conducted Friday by the Lake County Coroner's Office determined Vlamos-Jones died of hypothermia. Preliminary results showed no signs of trauma or foul play.
