Joliet man dies after erratic behavior at gas station, investigation underway
JOLIET, Ill. - A 39-year-old man died early Wednesday morning after exhibiting erratic behavior at a Joliet gas station, authorities said.
Officers responded at 4:25 a.m. to the Shell gas station at 401 South Larkin Avenue following a 911 call from the man, who claimed someone had pulled a gun on him and was trying to kill him.
Upon arrival, officers found the man inside the store, sweating profusely and making irrational statements.
Police believed the man might have been under the influence of an unknown substance and attempted to detain him for his safety.
While struggling with officers, the man fell to the ground, where he appeared to lose consciousness.
Officers administered Narcan, which briefly revived him, and repositioned his body while awaiting paramedics.
The Joliet Fire Department transported the man to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police found no evidence supporting the man’s claim of a gunman. However, an investigation revealed the man’s damaged vehicle near the 200 block of Emery Street. The car had struck a fence behind Pizza for U, located at 116 South Larkin Avenue, and a tree on Emery Street.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave per departmental policy, and the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the incident.
