Lake County Jail inmate who died after being found unresponsive in cell identified
WAUKEGAN, Ill. - A Lake County Jail inmate died after he was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday night.
The 53-year-old Zion man was remanded to the Lake County Jail on Monday for a drug-related charge. Officials said the inmate had "a number of health-related issues" and was assigned to the jail's 1 East cellblock, where he was being monitored.
The inmate was reportedly alert around 8:30 p.m. when the jail's nurse made a routine prescription drug pass, which is when inmates are provided with their doctor-authorized prescriptions, according to Lake County officials.
Correctional officers made rounds every half hour after the prescription drug pass. Around 9:35 p.m., a correctional officer saw the inmate unresponsive in his cell. He radioed for help and medical staff attempted life-saving efforts. The inmate was pronounced dead despite paramedics' efforts to save his life, officials said.
On Thursday, the Lake County Coroner's Office identified the inmate as Arthur Bankston II, of Zion.
An autopsy was conducted Thursday and preliminary results are pending further testing, including toxicology tests, the coroner's office said.
Bankston had underlying medical conditions, but further details haven't been released.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office said there were not any suspicious marks on Bankston's body.
