Loop shooting: Chicago man charged in deaths of 2 high school students

A Chicago man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of two teenagers who were gunned down outside their downtown high school last year.

What we know:

Tommie Coleman, 22, was arrested on Jan. 29 by members of the Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Task Force in the 5700 block of N. Mason.

Authorities say Coleman was one of the individuals involved in the Jan. 26, 2024, shooting that killed 16-year-old Robert Boston and 17-year-old Monterio Williams.

The shooting occurred around 12:25 p.m. near Madison Street and Wabash Avenue, just as a group of students were leaving Innovations High School. Witnesses said two vehicles—a dark sedan and an SUV—pulled up before multiple gunmen exited and opened fire.

Boston and Williams were struck, while others scrambled for safety.

Chicago police say the attackers fled southbound on Wabash Avenue. The two teens were rushed to Northwestern Hospital, where they died from their injuries.

The incident shocked residents and business owners in the Loop, as gunfire erupted in broad daylight along the city’s historic Jewelers Row.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not revealed a possible motive for the shooting or whether additional suspects have been identified.

What's next:

Coleman now faces multiple felony charges, including two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He also has an out-of-state warrant and a charge related to failing to register as a gun offender.

His detention hearing is scheduled for Feb. 1.
