Man critically injured in targeted Steger shooting, suspect sought: police
STEGER, Ill. - A man was critically injured in a targeted shooting in south suburban Steger and police are searching for the suspect, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 4:20 p.m. near Kings Road and Richton Road.
When officers arrived, they found a man in his 20s on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
Police said he was bleeding heavily, and officers provided emergency medical care before he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He was later airlifted to a trauma center.
As of Saturday, the man, a University Park resident, was listed in critical but stable condition, police said.
Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect, described as a Black man with a medium build, possibly in his 20s, wearing a gray jacket, flee westbound on Richton before officers arrived.
Despite a search using K-9 units, drones, and thermal imaging, police have not located the suspect.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and not a random act.
