Newborn baby found dead in duffle bag on Near North Side

The body of a newborn baby boy was found in a duffel bag early Saturday on the Near North Side, Chicago police said.

According to police, the boy was found dead at the scene in the first block of North Orleans Street around 5 a.m.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt told the Chicago Tribune that a firehouse crew discovered the bag covered in snow when they went outside to shovel snow.

No arrests have been made and no cause of death has been determined, according to the police department’s office of news affairs.

An autopsy will be performed on Sunday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office and Area Three detectives are investigating.
