NW Indiana city enacts midnight gas station closure ordinance to curb crime

Beginning Wednesday night, most gas stations in Hammond, Indiana will have to close from midnight to 5 a.m.

The new ordinance was created with the goal of cutting down crime.

Hammond has 37 gas stations and 11 will be exempted from the new rule.

After successfully petitioning the city on factors like the number of police calls to the business and proximity to the expressway.
