Suspect shot, officer injured in northwest Indiana Kohl's parking lot during altercation

An officer-involved shooting occurred in the Kohl's department store parking lot in Highland, Indiana Friday afternoon.

The store is located at 10353 Indianapolis Blvd.

At about 1:54 p.m., Highland police officers were dispatched to Kohl’s for a report of a male suspect who was allegedly shoplifting in the store.

The suspect had allegedly been observed shoplifting from Kohl’s in two past incidents, police said.

When officers arrived, they made contact with the suspect in the parking lot near a Silver Ford Escape.

An altercation then ensued between an officer and the driver. Another officer then fired shots into the vehicle and the suspect was struck in the arm, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody and then transported to an area hospital for a gunshot wound to his right arm.

A female passenger inside the suspect vehicle was taken in for questioning by the Lake County Sheriff's Department.

One of the Highland police officers was transported to an area hospital for injuries to his torso, head, hand and knees.

Police say his injuries are not life-threatening.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate this matter.
