Ohio police officer receives new K-9 as gift in Houston

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - A story that continues to make national headlines made its way to Houston. The police officer from Canton, Ohio who lost his K-9 in the line of duty got the opportunity to pick his next K-9 in Houston thanks to the organization K-9’s4Cops. The officer says this is one of the most emotional decisions he’s ever had to make.

Officer Ryan Davis has been in Houston for a couple of days. Monday was his final test.  He had narrowed down his pick to three K-9’s who sprang into action determined to take down their bad guy.

And then he found his match in Tuko.

Davis brought along a trainer to help him pick.

Jethro, the German Shepard that was killed at a shootout, will forever have a place in Davis’ heart.

“I had him as a puppy, he was a family member. I can't even describe the bond. I miss him,” Davis said.

Two weeks ago Davis never imagined he’d be laying eyes on dogs who are being called K-9 1, K-9 2 and K-9 3.

A lot goes into training these K-9s, and they’re pretty costly partners worth about $15,000.  The Houston non-profit K-9’s4Cops is giving Officer Davis his as a gift.  He says the dog will serve the dual purpose of being a street dog and narcotics and the K-9 will serve in another big capacity.

“They're a part of your life. They're a family member and there's always going to be a hole with Jethro. it will never be filled, but part of life we have to move forward. I almost feel bad because it happened so quick,” Davis said.

Now as the clock winds down and officer Davis prepares to welcome home a new family member, he’s hoping for a special feeling or maybe even a sign from Jethro.

“I'm thinking as time goes on one will separate itself. I will take all 3 of them home, if I could,” Davis said.
