CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A woman was killed and a man was hurt when a car struck them Thursday evening as it drove away from police officers in West Chatham.

Officers tried to pull the car over shortly before 6 p.m., but it sped away from the stop, Chicago Police said.

The car struck 55-year-old Julia Callaway and a 30-year-old man in the 7900 block of South Lafayette, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Callaway, who lived about a block from where she was struck, was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead.

An autopsy Friday found she died of multiple injures suffered in the crash and her death was ruled an accident, authorities said.

The man who was struck was treated at the scene, police said.

Several people were taken into custody and charges were pending Friday afternoon, police said.
