Man critically wounded in shooting near Mag Mile

A man was critically wounded in a shooting near the Mag Mile Monday afternoon.

At about 4:28 p.m., police say a 37-year-old man was near the sidewalk in the 500 block of North Rush Street when he was approached by an unknown offender who pulled out a gun and fired shots.

The victim was struck in the abdomen and thigh, police said.

The Chicago Fire Department said they located the victim inside the Marriott hotel on the Mag Mile and transported him to an area hospital in critical condition.

Mag Mile resident Julia Thompson says it’s not rare to hear about situations like the shooting Monday afternoon.

"I hear about it so often, so I’m not going to lie and say I’m not desensitized to it because, at this point, I absolutely am. It’s one of those things where it’s out of sight, out of mind," she said.

Chad Fensin says he saw the aftermath of the situation.

"He was in obvious pain. He was rolled over on his side, laying on the affected area, in obvious pain," said Fensin.

There are no offenders in custody. Area detectives are investigating.

Thompson says the situation is scary but won’t stop her from walking the city.

"It won’t stop me from living my life. Will I have my head on a swivel? Yeah, but it’s not going to stop my life," said Thompson.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them.
