Calls intensify for permanent closure of Pilsen bar after fatal shootout
CHICAGO - Calls are growing to permanently shut down a popular bar in Pilsen after a shootout left one person dead and two others injured.
Caminos de Michoacán, a longtime nightlife spot in the area, has been at the center of ongoing violence, prompting many neighbors to demand its closure.
A memorial of candles and notes was placed at a nearby stop sign, honoring the victims of the shooting.
The bar is currently closed by order of the Chicago Police Department, and a petition on Change.org is gathering support to shut it down for good. Petitioners argue the bar "creates dangerous environments" and strips away "joyous freedoms of childhood" for local families.
The incident occurred on Dec. 30, when an argument inside the bar led to a shooting outside, resulting in one fatality and two injuries.
The owner of Hair Flow Studio, located across the street, pointed out that the real issue lies in people’s inability to resolve conflicts without resorting to violence.
"I don't think the problem is the business itself. I think Caminos has been doing its thing for a long time. A lot of people in the community really love that space and go there to meet with their friends or have a good time. But I think the problem with America's gun obsession is at the root of it," the owner said.
Area detectives continue to investigate the shooting.
Detectives spoke to two persons of interest, but both were released without charges.
