Some outraged after Chicago Police shoot and kill man

CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - Chicago Police shot and killed a man in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. near 71st and Chappel. Police said that an officer on foot patrol spotted a man who "exhibited the characteristics of an armed person." Police said that they went to question him "when a confrontation ensues and he is shot. A weapon [was] recovered on scene."

Witnesses told Fox 32 News that the shooting was unjustified.

"He was walking across the street," witness Zachary Weems said.

"Productive citizen, he's not a thug, he's not a gang member, it's shocking," activist William Calloway said.

A large group of civilians gathered at the scene after the shooting. At least one person jumped on a squad car.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability said they had investigators on scene and that anyone with information should contact 312-746-3609 or chicagocopa.org.
