Man fatally shot during altercation with St. John police officer identified by coroner

A 40-year-old man who was fatally shot during an altercation with a St. John police officer on Wednesday has been identified.

What we know:

At approximately 11:30 a.m., St. John police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 14000 block of West 93rd Place. 

During the encounter, a physical altercation occurred, resulting in shots being fired. 

A 40-year-old man was wounded and taken to a local hospital. His family later confirmed that he had died. The Lake County Coroner has identified the man as Brandon Perkins.

The preliminary cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds and toxicology is pending.

Details about the altercation and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

The St. John Police Department released the following statement:

"The St. John Police Department is not commenting on the critical incident at this time. As is our practice and policy, we have turned the matter over to an outside agency to investigate."
