Third suspect charged in carjacking of couple outside Addison movie theater

A Bensenville man suspected of taking part in the carjacking of a couple outside an Addison movie theater will remain behind bars as he awaits trial.

Jair Delgado, 19, made his first court appearance on Wednesday where he was charged with one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm and one count of armed robbery with a firearm, according to a statement from DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin.

Delgado's co-defendants, a 17-year-old boy from Bensenville and a 16-year-old boy from Willowbrook, each appeared at a detention hearing earlier this week where they were ordered to remain in jail until their next court appearance.

On Dec. 29, a male victim was opening the door of his 2014 Infiniti for a female passenger when the trio approached the couple in the parking lot of the Marcus Cinema, prosecutors said. The suspects, two of whom were wearing masks, allegedly pulled out guns and demanded the man’s keys and belongings.

One of the suspects then entered the Infiniti, pointing a gun at the female victim, before the group fled in the stolen car and a gray Dodge Challenger that they arrived in.

Police located the Infiniti a short time later on Lake Street near Villa Avenue, but ended their pursuit when the stolen vehicle entered eastbound I-290.

At about 8:32 p.m., officers located the Dodge heading west on I-290 before it exited the expressway at 17th Avenue. At one point, the Dodge struck an unmarked squad car when officers tried boxing the vehicle in at Roosevelt Road and Harlem Avenue.

Two teenagers are accused of carjacking a couple at gunpoint outside a movie theater in Addison before leading police on a chase toward Chicago.

Police were able to successfully box the Dodge in on the 1st Avenue exit ramp and arrest the suspects.

Minutes later, the stolen Infiniti was located unoccupied in Maywood.

Authorities recovered three firearms from the Dodge, including a Glock with a defaced serial number and a switch to make it fully automatic, a Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun with an extended magazine containing 23 bullets and one in the chamber, and a Smith & Wesson M&P40 9mm handgun.

Berlin condemned the incident, calling it "unconscionable."

"The alleged armed carjacking of an innocent couple out to enjoy a movie during the holiday season put an entire community on edge," Berlin said in the statement. "Thanks to the outstanding follow-up work by the Addison Police Department, the third suspect in this case, Jair Delgado, is now facing serious felony charges that carry a possible penalty of up to forty-five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections."

Delgado's next court date is scheduled for Jan. 27.

The teen suspects are charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery, both Class X felonies. They will remain in custody until at least their next court date, scheduled for Jan. 9.
