Blood-soaked truck driver fled from Chicago area police, crashed into squad car
MUNDELEIN, Ill. - A report of an injured person in a parking lot early Wednesday morning in north suburban Mundelein led to a low-speed police chase and a crash involving a squad car.
The incident began a little after 2 a.m. with a 911 call of a person who was bleeding and possibly shot, according to Mundelein police.
Low-speed police chase
What we know:
Officers arrived at the scene in the 1100 block of West Maple Avenue where they found the person in a black pickup truck leaving a shopping center parking lot.
Police tried to stop the truck, but the driver refused to stop.
The fleeing truck was driving at "low speeds" and continuously stopped and drove off as officers tried to contact the driver. Officers discovered the driver was covered in blood.
Police continued to pursue the truck at low speeds to the intersection of IL Route 60/83 and Diamond Lake Road where the truck crashed into a Lake County Sheriff’s Department squad car that was trying to help Mundelein police.
After the crash, the driver got out of the truck and tried to run from officers. He was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit, police said.
The person was taken to Condell Medical Center for unspecified injuries. Two Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and one Mundelein officer were also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Police said the truck driver’s injuries were self-inflicted and the initial reports of a shooting were inaccurate.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) is investigating the crash with the sheriff’s deputy’s squad car. Mundelein police are investigating the rest of the incident.
Police said there was no threat of danger to the public.
What we don't know:
Police did not identify the truck driver, nor did they say if any charges were pending.
