Boy, 17, arrested after attempted robbery, SWAT situation

A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody Monday night after allegedly attempting an armed robbery and firing gunshots at a 60-year-old man on the South Side, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a person with a gun around 8:18 p.m. in the 200 block of West Pershing Road. The victim told police he was walking on the sidewalk when the armed suspect approached and attempted to rob him, according to CPD.

A brief struggle ensued, and the suspect fled the scene on foot. While fleeing, the teen turned and fired gunshots at the victim but did not strike him, police said.

Responding officers spotted the suspect with a handgun and tried to approach him. The teen ran into a nearby residence, prompting a SWAT response.

The suspect later exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

No injuries were reported. Area One detectives are investigating.
